Assign a card terminal to a screen
SumUp and card terminalsA screen accepts card payments through exactly one card terminal. You decide which one in the Studio. Without a card terminal, a screen won't complete its setup.
After pairing
- Step 1: After pairing, the Terminals page is at the Assign screen step.
- Step 2: If you have several free card terminals, choose the right one under Card terminal.
- Step 3: Under Screen, choose the screen where the card terminal is located. If there's only one free screen, it's already selected.
- Step 4: Click Assign.
The Studio reports that the card terminal now accepts payments at this screen. If you haven't created a screen yet, the Add screen button takes you there.
When adding a screen
When you create a new screen, Pair card terminal is the third step. There, you choose a free card terminal or pair a new one straight away with Pair a new card terminal. A newly paired card terminal then belongs to this screen immediately and is named “Terminal” followed by the screen's name. Find out more in Add a screen.
Assign later
Once the setup is complete, Terminals lists your card terminals. A card terminal without a screen shows “No screen”. Select it in the list. If you're allowed to assign card terminals, Assign then appears below the image of the device. The button opens the Screen selection. If all screens already have a card terminal, the button is missing, and the page explains why.
On the screen
While a screen is waiting for its card terminal, it shows “Terminal zuweisen.” (Assign terminal.) and checks the assignment by itself. In the Studio, under Screens, it shows “Step 3 of 3” with Continue setup and “Waiting for card terminal”. Only people who are allowed to assign card terminals see this note. Everyone else sees no note at the screen, even though it's still waiting. Once the card terminal is assigned, tap Fortfahren (Continue) on the screen. The display then starts. Who can assign
- The owner can assign, as can anyone who has “Finance” together with “Admin” or “Screens”. Anyone who only has “Finance” doesn't see an Assign button. Instead, the Assign screen step and the details of the selected card terminal show a note that “Admin” or “Screens” is also needed for this.
- In addition, a card terminal can only be assigned by the person who paired it. That's why the Terminals page and the Card terminal row in a screen's detail view only show your own card terminals. If someone else paired the card terminal, it says “None” there.

Good to know
- Each card terminal belongs to at most one screen, and each screen has at most one card terminal. That's why you need a separate card terminal for each screen.
- While a payment is in progress at the card terminal, the assignment can't be changed.
